Beowulf – Anglo Saxon Culture
Beowulfââ¬â¢s Strength and Fearlessness Anglo-Saxon poetry reflects their culture and life. Poetry is a wide part of their lives, and many of them passed to the descendants through the word of mouth. From many poetry told, ââ¬Å"Beowulfâ⬠would be a first class example of the Anglo-Saxon lives. ââ¬Å"Beowulfâ⬠is a poem about a brave hero who hears tales of a fearsome beast that tore a kingdom apart. Beowulf, the main character, as a brave warrior, fights the beasts and saves the kingdom. Beowulf is fearless and strong. These characteristics show the values of the Anglo-Saxon culture. Beowulf was ââ¬Å"the strongest of the Geatsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"greater and stronger than anyone anywhere is this worldâ⬠(lines 110-111). This proves that Beowulf was stronger than any Anglo-Saxon men. Beowulf also realizes himself that he is strong too. He says, ââ¬Å"He could never leave me behind, swim faster / Across the waves than I couldâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (274-275). He says this t o prove that he is strongest of all men, and that no one could beat him in anything. The significances in Beowulfââ¬â¢s outstanding physical abilities reveal the value of strength in the Anglo-Saxon culture. Among the Danes and Geats, Beowulf is praised as the epic hero because he defeats the vile monsters, Grendel and his mom. Grendel and Beowulf would be total opposites of each other. Grendel is the demon who ââ¬Å"snatched up thirty men, smashed them / Unknowing in their beds, and ran out with their bodiesâ⬠(37-38). The people of Herot despised Grendel for his slaughtering. When Beowulf kills Grendel, Herot gains freedom from the demon. That basically makes Herot love Beowulf for his good deed. Beowulf ââ¬Å"struck with all the strength he had left, / Caught her in the neck and cut it through, / Broke bones and all. â⬠(641-643) and ââ¬Å"then struck off / His head with a single blow. â⬠(663-665). The slaughter of Grendel and his mother saved Herot from its c ontinuing of sorrowful deaths. Again, Beowulfââ¬â¢s value of incredible strength reveals the Anglo-Saxon culture. Beowulf was fearless to all of his enemies and never lost a battle. He never forfeited any of them, and won victory every time fair and square. When Beowulf first arrives in Herot, he is asked to leave all his weapons. Beowulf says, ââ¬Å"My lord Higlac / Might think less of me if I let my sword / Go where my feet were afraid to, if I hid / Behind some broad linden shield: My hands / Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life / Against the monster. â⬠(170-175) Beowulf doesnââ¬â¢t want to look like a weak hero by taking all of his weapons, so he leaves his spears and battle-shields behind. He doesnââ¬â¢t want his king to think less of himself.Beowulf emphasizes his fearlessness by leaving all of his weapons behind. The standout of Beowulfââ¬â¢s fearlessness shows an Anglo-Saxon characteristic. Beowulf also shows his fearlessness during the celebration a fter Grendel retreats with his arm cut off. Beowulf says, ââ¬Å"When we crossed the sea, my comrades / And I, I already knew that all / My purpose was this: to win the good will / Of your people or die in battle, pressed / In Grendelââ¬â¢s fierce grip. Let me live in greatness / And courage, or here in this hall welcome / My death! (364-369) Beowulf says that he would rather die in Grendelââ¬â¢s hand if he could not defeat him. He does not fear to give up his life in a battle if he canââ¬â¢t win. This demonstrates that Beowulf is not fearful at all, even in front of death. Beowulfââ¬â¢s actions toward death show fearlessness, an Anglo-Saxon characteristic. From the poem ââ¬Å"Beowulfâ⬠, the main character, Beowulf shows strength and fearlessness, the characteristics of the Anglo-Saxon culture when he first arrives to Herot and when he defeats Grendel and his mother.

Free Essays on The Correlation Between Substacne Abuse, And Abuse Agaisnt Women By Male Partners
The Correlation Between: Substance Abuse and Women Abuse by Male Partners Introduction: The relationship between substance abuse and woman abuse is in no way an easy thing for me to talk about because I cannot stand men who do this, which is the main reason Iââ¬â¢ve researched this topic, and made my own perspective out of my readings and research. Hopefully by researching this topic, and gaining my own perspective I will understand it further, and be able to work with male clients that have done this. I feel that substance use is a risk factor, which is a direct cause to the severity of woman abuse, and that it there is no excuse for battering women. Substance abuse, as used in this paper, refers both to the abuse of alcohol or other drugs, and to dependency on alcohol or other drugs. While partner violence includes same-sex violence, this discussion of partner violence will be limited to abuse of women by their male partners or ex-partners, so the term woman abuse will be used throughout this paper. I have also included a section on the drug use, physical, and se xual abuse for street sex workers, and will give my opinions about that topic as well. It seems to be that the simplest concept that I have gathered from my research and that I feel is the most commonly accepted, is that the chemical properties of a substance act on a part the brain responsible for inhibiting violence. However, since no inhibition center has ever been located in the brain, the disinhibition model has challenged this theory. But I feel if disinhibition explained the relationship between substance abuse and woman abuse, we would expect batterers who were substance abusers to be non-violent when their substance use was terminated. This is obviously not the case because there are many abstinent and recovering substance abusers that go through cases in domestic violence courts and also go through batterers programs. The effect of substance abuse on men who... The 1998 Repeal of Glass Steagall ( 1933) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The 1998 Repeal of Glass Steagall ( 1933) - Essay Example The reasoning behind the enactment of this act was to provide the customers with a one stop financial mart, where they could undertake all their financial activities with one institution, including both saving and investment (Bartiromo, 2008). Before the legislation, individuals could make their savings with the financial banks but turn to other financial institutions for investment. The legislation allowed the commercial banks to merge with other financial services providing institutions and form Financial Holding Companies (FHC). With such mergers, the combination of these financial service providers allowed them to indulge in all forms of financial activities for their customers (Gramm, 2009). Thus, the FHCs were free to provide such services as granting loans, insurance underwriting and policy offers, brokerage and investment services to their customers, without the necessity of customers seeking such services from different institutions (Benston, 1972). Thus, the enactment was sort after, to ease customer activities of saving and investment. The other importance attached to the legislation is the fact that it would allow the financial institutions to exploit all the opportunities and revenue efficiencies, by increasing the scope of profit making that was previously hindered by the laws that were in place, notably the Glass Steagall Act (White, 1986). Through the consolidation of all the financial services within the jurisdiction of one institution, the institutions could capture the revenues generated through the various financial services such as insurance underwriting, brokerage, deposits and savings and the issuance of commercial loans (Bartiromo, 2008). Since the operational expenses of such institutions would be reduced, through having consolidation of overhead costs as well as having the same staffs handle different customer transactions, the costs for such institutions would be highly reduced, thus creating economies of scale. The costs

Supreme Court Appeals Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Supreme Court Appeals - Essay Example This refers to a court order that requests lower courts to send documents as well as materials pertaining to the case to the Supreme Court. The justices are required to vote to make a decision on whether or not the case has merit before granting a writ of certiorari (Denis et al, 2014). It takes a combination of different criteria for the Court to judge if a case is ââ¬Å"certworthy.â⬠A Circuit Conflict is the first criterion employed by the Supreme Court in granting certiorari. This criterion is used when there is a conflict amongst the lower federal courts concerning an issue. The conflict must be unbearable and current. The reputation of the lower courts involved in the conflict is a variable when employing this criterion (ââ¬Å"Granting Certiorariâ⬠par.7). The Importance of a case is also another criterion for judging if a case is ââ¬Ëcertworthy.ââ¬â¢ There are a number of different ways that a case can be important enough to attract the Supreme Courtââ¬â¢s attention. Similarly, cases that are important to the polity due to the societal and political impact of their resolution, for example Brown v. Board of Education as well as Roe v. Wade, can attract the attention of the Court. As a rule, two other factors influence the Courtââ¬â¢s assessment of the importance of a case: breadth, that is, the potential impact on many people as well as the effect on the federal government (ââ¬Å"Granting Certiorariâ⬠par.9). Another criterion is the areas of Interest to the Justices of the Supreme Court. Some justices may have a particular hobbyhorse and that can influence on whether the Court awards certiorari or not. Repeatedly, a Justiceââ¬â¢s area of interest is determined by personal history as well as geographic origin. For instance, justices from the West might be favor of granting certiorari in water rights cases. Flagrant abuses of justice or flagrant disregard for accepted legal doctrine can sometimes
IT and Entrepreneurship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
IT and Entrepreneurship - Essay Example This can be used by working groups for efficiency in project management and also assists by enhancing productivity. Online forums can be made for the purpose of discussing key issues among employees of a company. In large organizations, intranets normally get managed by the IT or Human resource departments. An intranet website performs and appears just as any other website, the exception being that it has firewall behind it to differentiate authorized and unauthorized users. An intranet is a very helpful private or personal network, which naturally is not necessary in all organizations. Therefore, the management of a company should decide whether or not to implement an intranet. Although the benefits of this technology are evidently clear, it is not compulsory to have it in the organizational system. The architecture behind intranet can be conceptualized as integration of four major elements: corporate information services, intranet users, communication links and the web server. This paper is going to discuss in length problems related to the use of intranet with relation to learning and inspiration. It also tries to give suggestions on the various features organizations can build on their intranet (Phan 2002, p.26). All network concepts have disadvantages; by nature, risks associated with security come first. This does not only concern issues to do with software security but also how employees handle and manage their passwords and usernames. In some instances, passwords can be left on places where everybody can be able to see while other users tend to choose simpler passwords that can be easy to guess. Most companies are not well to do with this method or way of information and data sharing. While one of the major purposes of intranet can be to enhance file sharing and communication in an organization, some employees might be frustrated since they might not be comfortable with the technology. The use of intranet technology also changes the work culture of an o rganization. Executives mostly in the top level management will get into the habit of delegating the duty of handling information and mails. The practice of sharing passwords and other vital company information could be fatal and so it could be necessary to respond to security threat posed by this. Another major setback brought about by the use of intranet is the level of reduced face to face interaction by employees. As the human interface gets reduced, the lack of bonding between parties can lead to loyalty issues and stamp down learning rapidly. This poses a great danger as it leads to impersonalization of the business. The complexity of the network system to employees also can inhibit learning and inspiration. Employees can view it to be very difficult to understand and use and so, not use it to its maximization. The network system can make employees feel overburdened by the amount of information and data it contains (Phan 2002, p.27). There are numerous features that could be a dded to an intranet network to aid learning and inspiration to users. Some of them include: Personalization and Segmentation: Bad user adoption can be mentioned as the major reason why intranet network projects fail. User experience can be an increase by tailoring content to meet user needs and also communicating in a more personal way. For increased user interface, a company should personalize content according to
